In collaboration with Eleanor Dodman Architects, Woody’s was commissioned to install its Classic Polished Concrete Flooring in a contemporary Ash White.

This ground-floor flat features a small private garden and has effectively created a seamless indoor-outdoor living and entertaining space by allowing the polished concrete to extend into the garden.

The simple yet thoughtfully designed kitchen and dining area complement the clean lines and modern aesthetic of the space, designed by Eleanor and her client.

Brought to life from a blank slate just months before, the windows, doors, tiles, worktops and joinery are all working together to create an effortlessly cool family living and entertaining space.

Effy’s Place, 2024

One of the best parts of my job is being invited back by our clients when their renovations are (finally!) finished.

Effy first contacted Woody’s in 2021 with the plans for her kitchen. Now, in 2024 as one of our, unintentionally, long-standing clients, we were so pleased to learn that the months, turned years, Effy committed to creating her own dreamy patch of London was all worth it.

We’re always intrigued to understand what influences our clients decision making when it comes to materials, appliances and finishes to their homes. When I met with Effy a few weeks ago, we chatted about her decision to use Polished Concrete as her main work surface, “I’d always admired Polished Concrete floors and worktops in the homes of friends (and on the telly) so decided to research options, came across Woody's and was really impressed by the range of colours/ finishes and the rest is history!”

Effy’s worktops, hand-made and installed by Woody’s in August 2023, are still looking flawless so, naturally, our conversation turned towards how living with Polished Concrete IRL and what her day-to-day cleaning product of choice is, “I had heard some horror stories (mainly from other trades) about concrete marking easily and needing to be ultra-careful in order to keep my light concrete colour looking pristine, but I have found it so easy to maintain the condition and aesthetic of the concrete since the worktops were installed. I use Method cleaners (Rhubarb and Tangerine are my faves!) and am really pleased with how the material is wearing after almost a year of being in use.”

Effy has created a serene and stylish home with an intelligent eye for design and high attention to detail. I wanted to know if Effy had any advice for other renovators or developers considering using Polished Concrete in their homes, “I feel like polished concrete is almost a neutral? So it very easily can be paired with other materials, and helps to make any surface or design scheme look really sleek. Not being totally sure on the colour scheme for my kitchen when I chose polished concrete as my worktop, I felt confident that whatever colour I went for, the concrete would compliment and enhance the chosen scheme.”

Minimalist Townhouse, 2023

At the start of this year, Woody and I (Izzy) weren’t sure what we were more excited about: the arrival of our second baby or our pre-ordered copy of Ali Heath’s ‘Create’ landing in our mailbox. We eagerly (and rather impatiently) awaited the arrival of our baby - and book. Then, on June 1st, we received both.

Ali.

A UK based interiors expert and bestselling author of her first publication ‘Curate’, has drawn on her passion for creativity to inspire her readers through beautifully tailored galleries and educative content. Ali’s exceptional combination of skills as a writer, author, stylist, interior designer, and creative consultant, make her indispensable to individuals and businesses that need a little help bringing their creativity to life.

Anna.

After our first meeting with Anna in 2021, Izzy climbed into the car, turned to me (Woody) and said, “I want to be Anna Unwin when I grow up.” Anna, founder of AU, channels her innate serenity and effortless sense of ‘cool’ into the pieces she sources and spaces she influences. Featured in Ali Heath’s latest publication ‘Create’ as the Minimalist Townhouse, Anna’s home showcases an authentic and timeless sense of style.

Greg.

Greg Cox first collaborated with Woody’s in 2019, and our shared love of kitchen interiors has inspired us to work together successfully on several other residential projects. Greg’s background as a trained artist with an MA in Fine Art, specialising in sculpture, made him a natural fit to embody and express, through his joinery, Anna’s design objectives.

Greg approached Woody with a design brief, to cast a statement kitchen island, which aligned with Anna’s singular vision, would serve as its centrepiece. Woody regularly draws upon his historic knowledge and study of ceramics, and accomplishments in stonemasonry, to assist him in interpreting both the qualitative and artistic objectives of his clients. In this instance, Woody was guided by Anna’s colour palette: an enduring blend of oat and ivory hues, to create a uniquely bespoke colour, designed by, and exclusively for, Minimalist Townhouse.

The island is an entirely one-of-a-kind creation at the heart of this family home and is a true expression of the timeless style Anna freely radiates.

The owner specified an Ash White Concrete which has been perfectly complemented by the cool, sleek interior styling throughout the lower ground floor of this three story build.

Six months on, following the installation of this uniquely designed island, Woody’s invited themselves over to catch up with their clients, Ben and Kate.

“Ben approached us in late 2021 with his design for a Polished Concrete Island that would eventually feature as the centre piece of their kitchen renovations” recalls Izzy Taylor-Wood, Director.

“After a couple of zoom calls with Ben, and a few adjustments later, the final drawings were shared with us. I immediately loved this design; it was simple and elegant but carried with it a boldness I knew would translate really well with our concrete” comments Steven Wood, Director.

Woody’s often get challenged on the benefits of Polished Concrete in comparison to other worktop materials and what day-to-day cleaning and maintenance of the surface really involves. Six months into their completed renovations, the couple were able to share their first-hand, and honest experience, of living with concrete. “Texturally it’s just beautiful. It’s warm and tactile…not what you expect from concrete,” comments Ben, client and designer, “it has a feeling of softness while being hard and structurally strong…we didn’t expect this level of quality and depth of finish.” And daily use? “It’s very low maintenance and very easy to keep it looking beautiful,” says Kate, client.

Woody’s pride themselves on developing strong, working relationships with its clients, with ‘trust’ at the centre, “this commission was managed differently to most of our other projects,” says Izzy, “we are usually approached with the request of designing a structure on behalf of our clients which they can then customise through colour and detailing. Ben and Kate had a clear direction for the design that would complement the lifestyle and aesthetic of their home; Woody’s were simply on hand to facilitate this vision.”

Polished Concrete remains a unique material choice for use in both commercial and residential projects in the UK perhaps lending to its luxury price tag, whilst Quartz reigns as the ‘trusted’ and ‘superior’ choice of material for everyday use, with a ticket price to suit most budgets. But what is the real cost of the initial saving? “We have compact quartz to our other work surfaces; it’s not as durable or stain resistant as concrete” says Ben, “concrete worktops are also monolithic with far less joints compared to other (expensive) worktops, providing a better finish.” “Those contemplating Polished Concrete as their worktop material should seriously consider it over other materials that just don’t have the aesthetic of Polished Concrete,” says Kate.

So, it looks like there’s no turning back for this couple of Polished Concrete converts. We asked Ben and Kate to comment on their experience of working with Woody’s in bringing their design to life, “we are truly grateful for the craftsmanship that has gone into our kitchen island. The attention to detail, the slight corrections, and alterations to ensure it is just right for our needs have been really appreciated, along with the service and professionalism of the whole team.

Steeped in history and oozing with all the finishings of a classically chic, urban home stands this semi-detached Coach House conversion In the heart of Clapton now featuring our Polished Concrete Floor in Flint.

Clapton, until the 18th century, was previously rendered as ‘Clopton’ - ‘the farm on the hill.’ These terrace houses were once storehouses and back roads for markets. Now they have been reclaimed to their former beauty with the addition of some crittall windows and vintage furnishings to pay tribute to their humble beginnings.

Renovations began in 2018 by the skilled hand of Turner Architects who appointed Woody’s to design and fabricate 40mm thick Polished Concrete Worktops in a ‘classic concrete grey.’ A custom colour was born from experimentation and is now established in many of our installations throughout London - better known today as ‘Heron’

Victus Soul has it sussed for keen gym-goers. For the ultimate luxury gym experience from the moment you step into the cool, dimly lit juice and coffee bar featuring a diamond Polished Concrete Floor and custom Polished Concrete worktops in Neptune.

We were invited onto the project by Paul and Pete to create a series of custom Polished Concrete basins, vanities and worktops followed by a HIIT & Box class in their uber cool basement studios!

Invited onto the renovation by Turner Architects, this project showcases our Exposed Aggregate Polished Concrete Worktops in Chalk.

As featured in 2020’s ‘Don’t Move Improve!’ exhibition as a contender in London’s Best Home Extensions.
